Report from judge Liz Cartledge (Our Dogs)
Championship Show: It couldn´t have been a better day for this 18 class show held at the well equipped Minstead Hall, Nr. Lundhurst, a lovely port of the country. Everything was so well organized, there was a friendly an welcoming atmosphere and the catering was truly exceptional. Lunch was a social and convivial occasion and I enjoyed meeting and talking to the Society´s Patron, Mrs Lucy Jackson – we discovered that we shared a mutual fondness and admiration for the late Mrs Edna Howard-Jones! I came away with two storybooks and one breed book, written by Lucy Jackson, which I know I shall enjoy reading.
I was always enjoyed judging Irish Terriers, the puppies are totally irresistible and the adults roo really enter into the spirit of things, responding to the judge as well as their handlers, while keeping a keen eye on the other exhibits in the class. I love that slightly reckless attitude an ready for anything look that this breed has in abundance, controlled gameness is fine in a Terrier and I hope it is never lost.
There were 38 dogs entered making 41 entries, with only a few absentees. The bitches were stronger in both quantity and quality – and decisions were close. This is one of the few Terrier breeds which has not been spoilt by the docking ban. You often see Kerries and Airedales with quite tightly curled tails, but not so the Irish.
Front movement was not good and some could have gone with a bit more reach and drive. We had some flying ears, and size could have been more uniform. Temperaments were great – a perfect day for me.
Best in Show was a German visitor, Rosalind von der Emsmühle, winning her 2nd CC over here. Irvonhill White Rose was Res. Best in Show and Kell´s Touch of Fleet won the Dog CC and Best Opposite Sex.
Best Puppy went to the truly delightful Hobam Peary Star, just 6 and a half month and full of promise.
Ch Montelle Mi´Lady was a well deserved Best Veteran, still a serious contender in the breed.

I couldn´t take my eyes off the winner from the moment she entered the ring. What a superb Irish, absolutely on tiptoe of expectation, bang on form. Beautifully presented, conditioned and never put a foot wrong standing or moving. Great silhouette and overall proportions, lovely head an expression. Completely in time with her handler, easy mover. Splendid body and quarters. Up to size for a bitch, but I loved everything about her.
