Cystinuria in the Irish Terrier (8): Summary of the lecture by Dr. Merschbrock (2023 03.05) and a first hand status report

  • Dear visitors of Irish Online and friends of the Irish Terrier

The Irish Terrier Breeders' Meeting on 5 March 2023 in Bad Sassendorf was a first class opportunity to get a first hand status report on the state of research on cystinuria in the Irish Terrier.

Dr. Ulrich Merschbrock, who has worked on the subject with great dedication over the past years, gave a lecture in which he reported on the latest findings and results from research. His reorganisation proposals, ideas and approaches have persuaded Prof. Dr. Tosso Leeb, Director at the Institute of Genetics/Pet Genetics at the University of Bern to engage him as an external scientific collaborator for the project and the ongoing study. We are pleased to be able to present the summary of the lecture here with the permission of Dr. Merschbrock and wish Dr. Merschbrock continued success in his research and thank him for his continued high level of commitment to the welfare of our Irish Terriers.

As the summary of the lecture is extensive, we provide the document in PDF format via a link for download:

The Protein Provocation Test (PPT) and Sample Collection Guide

If you own an Irish Terrier male that is at least 15 months old, has no health problems, is not neutered or hormone-chipped, or is receiving the drug Ypozane, then you can participate in the study. By doing so, you will be making an important contribution to research into hereditary cystinuria type III, which occurs in the Irish Terrier and a further 60 other dog breeds. If you would also like to know whether your dog may be forming cystine stones, then ideally you should carry out the protein provocation test (PPT).

All important further information on calling, sample collection and test procedure is contained in the document Call for sample collection using the protein provocation test (PPT). You will also find the information to the PTT in the summary of the lecture.

Many thanks for the attention and interest!
